The Rhapsody of Greek Seamanship – Giorgos M. Foustanos

Modern Greek shipping is a timeless achievement of Greek seamanship — a rhapsody first composed by dozens of sailing ship captains, writing the epic of a unique, global feat. With limited financial resources but with abundant courage and determination, Greek seamen undertook the difficult transition from sail to steam at the end of the 19th century. They managed not only to evolve into shipowners but also to chart significant courses, which were continued and expanded by future generations.
The exhibition documents the beginnings and journeys of 60 prominent Greek shipping families over nearly a century. The common denominator: a Greek sailor who dared to take the step toward ship ownership. Through a wealth of visual material — over 700 images — the modern Greek maritime miracle and its true protagonists are brought to light: the sailors and their families.
