Our folk music, over the decades of its dominance, apart from the familiar forms in which it matured, also underwent significant transformations. It borrowed and lent elements—musical, thematic, and instrumental—from other genres and regions, with innovation being a central element. Musicians often transitioned between genres, blending influences from traditional, island, classical, light, Balkan, swing, and Latin music, navigating between the Piraeus school and other styles.
This year’s 9th Rebetiko Festival includes examples of such mixtures and interactions. It will take place from August 28 to 31, 2025, under the thematic title “Syra of Markos Vamvakaris – Rebetiko… The Multifaceted”.
